Starting Off

The snow started falling early in the morning. Somehow it seemed a fitting start to a new year. We were not the first ones to go far a walk in the forest to start the year. The new snow already showed the footprints, or more accurately hoof prints, of the deer living in the forest.

Take A Deep Breath

Win lose or draw, life goes on, I didn’t take many pictures of the fall colors this year, but it seems much more peaceful today to share a couple, rather than discussing US election results. The forest trails seem so peaceful. Here no-one cares about elections.

Out In The Woods

I am after three months back in Canada just beginning to understand how much I am missing Germany. Not the bureaucracy of course, but I miss the Black Forest. Ottawa has an urban forest with many kilometres of trails, but somehow it just doesn’t feel the same. Still, it is better than a concrete jungle. […]

Longing For Sunshine

The weather forecast has a hint of sunshine one day next week. I’m not holding my breath. Winter in Sulzburg is the gloomy season. When it isn’t raining it is cloudy. Yes, it is warm, but I’d rather have minus twenty and the sun sparkling on the snow. The snow here melted in two days […]

More From Wolf’s Canyon

A photo essay today – each picture worth at least a thousand words – as a follow-up to yesterday’s post. I’m looking forward to sharing this walk with visitors from Canada – and will probably introduce a few Germans to it also.

Wolf’s Canyon

February is supposed to be cold. Even in southern Germany. Except it wasn’t on the Saturday when my wife and I spent a little bit of time exploring Wolfsschlucht, or Wolf’s Canyon, near Kandern. Not only was it sunny, but it was 18 Celsius. I think it was minus 30 that day in Ottawa. We […]

Typha Fever

One of the things I like about being a blogger is the opportunities it presents to learn something new. As evidenced by the subject of today’s post. I expect to learn something new when I travel. That’s part of the reason for going some place you haven’t been before. With a love of history and […]

Pond Life

Wandering through Freiburg on Friday (I couldn’t resist that alliteration) and went for a walk in Seepark, a large park near the downtown. Discovered a small lake there (which is what gives the place its name, see being German for “lake.” Spent some time just looking at the aquatic and shore life. So nice to […]

Walking The Urban Forest

I have at times raved about Ottawa’s urban forest and the relaxing walking trails to be found, hundreds of kilometres of them. Ottawa though isn’t unique. On Saturday in Freiburg (Germany) we discovered a local forest, which, if not as extensive as Ottawa’s did give a nice respite from the sun on a very warm […]

Back to Mer Bleue

Spent some time yesterday on a family outing in Ottawa’s urban forest, walking the trails in the Mer Bleue area. I had my phone with me, but didn’t take any pictures, figuring I have been here so many times before there was no reason to add to the photo collection. Instead I am re-posting something […]
