The Trail To Britzingen

Twice we had set out to explore this small Black Forest village, and both times we wound up taking different paths. Last Saturday we determined not to get sidetracked. We were successful in that we made it to Britzingen, but we didn’t explore the village. My wife decided that we had plenty of time, so […]

Trust

A roadside stand in Ihrlingen, unattended. You put your money in the red container if you are going to take anything.  The sign is a reminder though to those who may be tempted. “Das 7. Gebot: Du sollst nicht stehlen” translates as “The seventh commandment: Thou Shall Not Steal.” That’s from Exodus 20:15 in The […]

Harvest Festival II

One of the highlights of the Harvest Festival in Ihringen was visiting the Lutheran church in the town. The altar was decorated for he festival, and special Thanksgiving services were held. Pretty much everyone who visited the town dropped by the church to see how it had been decorated.

Cultural Differences – II

In North America time is money. We are always looking for ways to save it; it may be the most valuable thing we own. Europe runs at a different pace. That was obvious the first time I went to a gas station to fill up the car. We had borrowed a car to run some […]

A Driving Lesson

I knew that eventually I would have to get behind the wheel of a car and discover first-hand what it was like to drive in Germany. I just didn’t expect it to be this soon. The Autobahn is legendary, no speed limits, but I haven’t been on it. No, for me it is winding mountain […]

Cultural Differences – I

I mentioned not long ago that I was planning on doing a series of posts on cultural differences I had discovered between living in Canada and living in Germany. I’ve got a few posts started, but nothing finished yet. Then I remembered. When I started this blog most of my posts were reflections on a […]

A Night-time Visit

Went for an evening walk and the castle in the centre of Badenweiler was irresistible. I was sure it would be locked, but it wasn’t so in we went. Next time I will remember to bring my camera; this time all I had was a phone, but you get the idea. The view of the […]

The Donkey’s Tale

From the distance I thought it was sculpture. Maybe some tribute to Shakespeare and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Up close that was obviously not the case. There’s a speaker system, but what was it used for. Not speaking German I was a little puzzled at a donkey’s head on top of a column on a […]

A Walk in the Vineyard

It is always nice when you can combine business with pleasure. Last week, having newly arrived in Germany, I had a leisurely walk with my new boss. It was supposed to be a half hour, just to stretch our legs, but it was a gorgeous sunny afternoon, and there was no reason we couldn’t talk […]

The Church Down The Street

Went wandering through downtown Sulzburg last week. There’s an apartment there I wanted to look at, a possible place to live for the next few years, so it seemed to make sense to check out what the town is like. I hesitate to use the word quaint, but it did seem like the quintessential German […]
