Pictures of Insurrection

Children play in one of the bouncy castles set up for them as part of the trucker’s protest

The city councillor for my ward (who is also chair of the police services board) was on the radio Monday talking about the “insurrection” in downtown Ottawa. The former governor of the Bank of Canada has labeled the ongoing truckers’ protest as “sedition.”

What the media fails to mention in quoting these two politicians is their strong ties to the ruling Liberal party. Do you think they might be a little biased in their evaluation of what is happening?

Road hoickey is a Canadian tradition. Somehow I don’t think these people are getting ready for an assault on Parliament Hill

I suspect neither of them has actually been in downtown Ottawa in the past week. I have. And for the next few days I am going to focus on what the truckers have been calling Freedom Convoy 2022.

I have seen good, and there has been bad – and a lot of misunderstanding. Laws have been broken, and police have stood by while it happened. Positions have become entrenched, and no-one knows how it will end.

Toys were available fro free for the children who might be feeling a little bored after a week in the nation’s capital. On the table in the background were grocery items, also available for free. Other tables had clothing, toilet paper and various other “household” items.

In January 2021 demonstrators took over the U.S. Capitol. People died in the assault. You can make a case that was an apprehended insurrection. In Ottawa, when the police, with snipers positioned on nearby buildings, moved in Monday to close the truckers’ fuel depot, they were met not with violence but by cries of “Shame.” This is insurrection?

Today, a few pictures that I haven’t seen in news coverage that has focused on trucks blocking streets with their horns blaring. We’ll save the reflections for tomorrow.

It really looks like these people are preparing to overthrow the government, doesn’t it?

  1. Apparently your ability to see where everyone is at a given time is getting rather rusty. You have no idea where I’ve been or what my sources of information are. All I can say is that obviously I’ve read more, seen more, and spoken to more than you.

  2. The Canadian Homeless Hub posted a list of by-laws that they believe pose a threat to the homeless whose simple presence is perceived as a threat to the prevailing social and economic order. I don’t know how many of these kinds of laws the truckers are also contravening (if any) but I do think the truckers presence is being perceived as a threat by a segment of the population who has not been suffering social and economic hardships during this pandemic.

    1. After two weeks, I’m just hoping they can figure out an end to the impasse. For everyone’s sakes.

      1. I’ve been thinking about that. Trudeau could say his government has reviewed recent stats and the ‘science’ confirms that vaccine mandates for truckers are no longer required. In addition, PCR tests for entering Canada will not be required for Canadians if they can show they have a home to isolate in for 5 days and they promise to follow local masking mandates for another 5 days. He could outline a step by step program for concluding all federal government covid mandates.

Trudeau could say he is urging the American government to remove the trucker vaccine mandates. He could say he is in complete support of the Premiers of every province, no matter what choices they make for removing mandates.

      2. Do you think he is likely to do so?

      3. No, probably not. But there has been a flurry of announcements from various provinces on a timeline for ending mandates and he is being criticized from within the Liberal party.

  3. It is obvious you haven’t been there to see for yourself. Look at your language and ask yourself: am I demonizing those I disagree with by my use of terms such as mobsters, homophobic, sexist or racist? Am I juding thousands of people unfairly?

I saw women and people of color taking part in the protest. I saw no-one urinating on monuments (though there was one incident reported the first day). I saw no racist, homophobic or sexist signs – though here were many that used inappropriate language to attack the Prime Minister and his policies.

Civil disobedience is part of our democracy. If the authorities choose not to arrest the lawbreakers then the citizens should be questioning those authorities as to why the don’t act.

One of the core tenets of civil disobedience of course is non-violence. When police raided the protesters fuel depot there was no resistance offered. I have no problems of teh police decide to move the protesters out – they are, after all, breaking the law. If the police move, I would hop the protesters wil go quietly.

I gather you apparently know who set the fire under investigation Monday – please do share that information with the police services, they don’t know yet who set it.

  4. Really sickening how these mobsters are using children as pawns in this occupation–obviously teaching them to disrespect the laws and governing bodies. Not to mention all the homophobic/sexist/racist hate language being flung around–good to be exposing these kids to that? What’s next–teaching them to urinate on our monuments? Certainly showing them that our Parliament is just a house for play, and no serious business happens here.

These kids play while the downtown children’s schools are closed and their families are afraid to venture outside. “Household” items are on tables, since the stores nearby are afraid to open. Non-whites (especially) are being targeted by these anarchists, including setting a fire inside an apartment building, cornering a black woman on the street for daring to wear a mask in pubic, and the list goes on.

Really sickening to see this indoctrination of the young. But then, that’s how hate is sustained over the generations.
