Grey Cup 2017

It is that day again. The Grey Cup game is tonight.

I was supposed to be there, but by the time tickets went on sale I knew I would be in Germany. I might have opted for watching on television instead anyway. I went to the game in 2004, the last time it was in Ottawa. It can be cold in the stadium if it is snowing and the wind blowing (as it usually is). Though there is something to be said for being at the national championship game for Canadian football.

I almost went last year, when the game was in Toronto. I was sorry afterwards that I hadn’t been there, as the Ottawa RedBlacks, led by quarterback Henry Burris, pulled out a win in overtime. Burris had left the field after the warmup before the start of the game. There was a rumour he was injured and would not play. He didn’t show signs of injury on the field though and was named the game’s MVP. It was only later that the extent of his injury became known – he returned to Ottawa on crutches. It is amazing what you can accomplish before the pain killers wear off.

Tonight, I have a dilemma. I want to watch the game, which features the Calgary Stampeders against the Toronto Argonauts. The Argos are definite underdogs, but they have a history of beating the Stamps in the big game. And, unlike the American Super Bowl, the Grey Cup is usually thrilling to watch. But the kickoff is 6:30 p.m. Ottawa time. That’s 12:30 a.m. my time. I’m expected to work in the morning.

I could try napping first, but I think if I did that I wouldn’t be able to fall asleep when the game ends about 3:30 a.m. And if I stay up late, there are no guarantees I wouldn’t fall asleep before the second half starts. That’s not really a problem, except that since I would be watching on pay-per-view it would seem like a waste of money.

At this point I have no idea what I am going to do. Suggestions are appreciated. Maybe I should just pay for the game, go to sleep at my regular time and watch the game replay online before checking the news to see who won. I wonder if I have that much self-discipline?

  1. well, what happened? Did you watch or not?

    1. I waffled back and forth and eventually opted for sleep. From watching the highlights it seems like I made the wrong decision. Story of my life when it comes to sporting events.
