Advent 2017
It is that time of year again. Time to put op the tree and decorations in anticipation of Christmas. We won’t have a Christmas tree this year, I don’t think. I am sure i could go into the Black Forest and cut one down (though that is probably illegal), but then I would have to […]
A Tale of Two Churches
My friend Paul had a post earlier this week about Christmas Day 2022. That’s the next time the holiday falls on a Sunday. Some churches, for what seemed to be good reasons I am sure, cancel their services when December 25 is a Sunday. Paul’s words got me to thinking, and I wrote this post […]
Overlapping Holidays
Seasons overlap. We know this is a consequence of the pace of society having picked up exponentially over the past few decades. But my first trip to the grocery store this year left me wondering if we have somehow spun out of control. With Christmas over I expect retailers to be looking toward the next […]
Merry Christmas!
It seems, then,” said Tirian, smiling himself, “that the Stable seen from within and the Stable seen from without are two different places.” “Yes,” said the Lord Digory. “Its inside is bigger than its outside.” “Yes,” said Queen Lucy. “In our world too, a Stable once had something inside it that was bigger than our […]
Christmas Eve
The Queen’s birthday is a national holiday in Canada. We celebrate it on what is described as the “May 24th long weekend.” May 24 is not the birthday of the reigning queen, Elizabeth II but that of her great-great- grandmother, Victoria, who reigned for most of the 19th century. People got used to the May […]
Christmas Tree Decorations
You wouldn’t believe my day yesterday. Or maybe you would. Anyway, I didn’t have a chance to finish the post I had planned for today. It is the first day of winter after all. So instead I’m repeating the most popular post of last year’s Christmas season. I still immensely dislike this cat, but at […]
Santa Revisited
I first posted this a couple of years ago. Well, technically, I first published it in 1991 – but there wasn’t much Internet back then. I don’t know of the word “blog” had even been invented then. (I know, now that I have said hat someone will look it up and let me know.) What […]
December Already?
Where did the year go? It seems just yesterday we were looking at the beginning of 2016, full of hope; now things are winding down, Or should that be winding up, given the busyness of the season? Christmas is coming, but you already knew that. It is 24 days away. Unless of course you follow […]
First Sunday of Advent…
…and nothing has really changed from last year. My daughter’s cat, who usually behaves like a dog (all the worst dog features imaginable), for some reason spends Advent thinking she is a Christmas tree ornament. I’m sure I’ll get some much better shots of her in the tree before Christmas Day arrives.
Truly Random Thoughts For Your Sunday
Watching the Remembrance Day ceremonies at the National War Memorial on television Friday I was struck once more with the passage of time. When I was younger, the elderly veterans at the cenotaph were my grandfather’s generation, men who had fought in the First World War. Those men are long dead. It has been 71 […]
