Built To Last

Stein Am Rhein, Switzerland, is a tourist mecca – primarily I think because of its architecture. This house in particular caught my eye. Haus Vetter (Cousin’s House) dates back to 1473, though I suspect there may have been an upgrade or two since then. Canadian houses aren’t expected to last that long. I’m wondering why […]

Frustration Sets In

Allow me to vent for a minute. I was just in the kitchen, and killed at least a dozen flies. There were more when I finished than when I started. It is 31 degrees Celsius, so closing the windows isn’t really an option. I want to cook some food, but not myself. In Canada this […]

Happy Canada Day

It is July 1 already. Half the year is gone. Do you need any other reason for a party? Canadians celebrate their country today, which has me thinking about patriotism. We think we have the best country in the world, but citizens of other countries might disagree. I won’t list all the good things that […]

Inside The Barrow

It has been stinking hot in southern Germany the past few days, which means I’ve been moving somewhat in slow motion. Things get done, but they seem to take longer. We have guests visiting from Canada, and we are trying to allow them to experience this area in a way tourists rarely get, to see […]

What World Cup?

A year ago Germany was awash in patriotism as the nation cheered on the national team in the World Cup. It was like hockey in Canada only more intense. Business came to a halt during games. Church services were canceled. There were flags everywhere. Large screens were set up in public places to allow communal […]

Words of Wisdom

I couldn’t resist when I saw this on a friend’s Facebook page – I just had to share it. I try not to argue with strangers, or even those people I know, especially about politics. Took me a while to learn that though. I remember wasting an evening with a close-minded individual who was very […]

Parade Day

I don’t want to rain on their parade. Or maybe I do. I just can’t get caught up in the hysteria over the Toronto Raptors. For non-basketball fans, the Raptors won the NBA championship last week, for the first time, and the victory parade is today. I’m assuming there is television coverage, but I won’t […]

Gutedel Tag – The Event III

I uploaded the pictures from the May 30 “Gutedel Day” right after the event, planning on a post for the next day. I got sidetracked, which is why they are showing up two weeks later. At first I hadn’t realized just how many pictures I had decided to share, too many for just one post. […]

Gutedel Tag – The Event II

Today a batch of pictures I took during the annual “Gutedel Day” wine festival in our region. For me the highlight was being able to walk on the highway. I guess that shows where my priorities lie.

Gutedel Tag – The Event I

They really did it. They shut the highway down for 14 kilometres for a giant wine tasting, Gutedel Tag (Gutedel Day). It was a great party. Turns out the shuttle buses didn’t start running until 6 p.m., by which time I was home, so I didn’t get to see it all. Sulzburg’s location, at […]
