A Minor Miracle

The pollsters were right, my gut feeling was wrong and Democrats now control both houses of Congress. That armies of lawyers are not converging on the states the Democrats flipped in Tuesday’s midterm elections is a miracle of sorts.

After all, the Republican Party playbook in recent years has been to question the authenticity of Democratic Party victories and use whatever legal action possible to reverse the voters’ choices. That Donald Trump is accepting teh outcome of this election and not seeking to overturn it amazes me.

Maybe has has realized that nothing has changed, that the midterms don’t matter.

The House of Representatives may impeach Trump (again), but the Republicans in the Senate have enough votes to ensure he stays in office. Quite rightly the bar set for the removal of a President is a high one, and given that most of not all of the Republicans in Congress are part of the Trump cult, his job is safe.

Will Congress attempt to curtail his excesses and illegalities? Definitely. Will they succeed? I doubt it.

The last two years have shown just how flawed the American system is. Trump will continue to rule by Executive Order and his acolytes will jump to do his bidding. The courts and Congress will be ignored.

Who is going to stop him? Those around him are intent on implementing their agenda, and if that conflicts with the law and the Constitution, well, they know their way is better. Laws are there to restrain the other side, not the true believers.

At least Trump is sparing the nation from a long legal battle and the spectre of another insurrection like the one he incited on January 6, 2020. That is something to be thankful for.

But Americans who think the election ressults will restrain Trump in any way are in for a rude awakening.
