When I worked in radio a lot of songs crossed my desk. I tried to listen to every record I was sent, but, years later, I don’t always remember the songs. Like this one.
The single came to me from Lift Records, and independent label in Fairbanks Alaska. I don’t remember ever airing any of the records they sent. Indeed, I had forgotten all about them until earlier this week when I was filling a box of records to take to the local thrift store as a donation. I just don’t have the storage space anymore, it is time to get rid of the music I don’t listen to.
This title grabbed my eye, though I had no memory of the song. The Strait of Hormuz has been much in the news this year, but in 1984 I don’t remember giving it much thought. Maybe I listened to the record, but most likely I didn’t.
I might have if there had been printed information about the artist attached. The name Michael Wedgewood didn’t ring a bell, but an online search (which couldn’t be done 42 years ago) tells me he was the bass plater for the British band Caravan. Their music I knew, and based on that I think I would have listened to the record at least once.
How does a successful British musician, a veritable rock star, wind up in rural Alaska? People do strange things for love.
I am wondering though about the rest of the singles in that box. So many names I didn’t recognized. I’ve probably passed on a few gems. I’d regret that, but I really don’t have the space anymore.
Swimming in the Strait of Hormuz – Michael Wedgewood
I catch a ride on an ICBM.
Drop me off on the first exchange.
Doesn’t even matter if it’s us or them.
I still be in range
While I’m swimming the Strait of Hormuz The last thing I’ll ever do. Swimming the Strait of Hormuz. The water’s a lovely green blue. Swimming Strait of Hormuz.
Slowly I drift in the tanker’s way Over toward the Arabian shore.
A lonely dove in a world outbreak And it’s beginning to pour.
I’m swimming the Strait of Hormuz If it’s the last thing I ever do.
Swimming the Strait of Hormuz. The water’s a lovely green blue.
Swimming the Strait of Hormuz.
The beginning is near.
Find your faith. Show no fear. It’s a season for decision.
The beginning is the end.
We’ve got all these boats in the Middle East. Like little fingers in a great big dyke.
But do we really need to compete? It’s not a place we like.
I’m swimming the Strait of Hormuz. The last thing I’ll ever do.
Swimming the Strait of Hormuz. The water’s a lovely green blue.
Swimming the straight and narrow way.
Heading straight for the narrow gate.
Swimming the straight and narrow narrow way. If it’s the very last thing I do, swimming the Strait of Hormuz.
