I missed it the first time I went looking for it.
Which seems strange. How do you miss a facility that holds more than 100,000 people? Turns out it’s not hard when all that’s left is a grassy hill.
With the passage of time Rome’s Circus Maximus is long gone. The stands where thousands watched the chariot races collapsed long ago, and the area around it has grown. You can only imagine what it must have been like, the roar of the crowd, the heat, the dust, the thrill of victory.
I seem to have read somewhere that those stands weren’t the safest, that on one occasion they collapsed and 30,000 people died. No building codes in those days. Of course now I can’t remember where I read that, so don’t quote me on it.
These days there are no stands, just an open space used for public gatherings and rock concerts. The Rolling Stones (among others) have played here.
If you want an idea of what it was like back in the day, check out the chariot scene in Ben Hur.
