“We defend Canada for nothing. We don’t get anything. They don’t pay us to defend Canada, but we defend Canada and
they understand that.” – US President Donald Trump.

It is an interesting perspective. As long as I have been alive, Canada and the United States have cooperated militarily, joining in various UN and NATO missions and continental defence. It comes as a surprise to Canadians to find out that Americans think they are paying for our defence.

I could make a strong case that the US does nothing to defend Canada (another post maybe if there is demand for it). however, the big question is, who is America defending us from?

Canada ‘s relations with other countries are good. There are some that we are closer to, others, like China and Iran, that we have minor disputes with, but those countries aren’t threatening us.

We did have an ongoing skirmish with Denmark that lasted more than 50 years over Han Island. That eventually got worked out, after our militaries exchanged salvos of whiskey and schnapps. Canadians believe in civilized warfare.

Not that we haven’t had problems in the past. Three we have had to repel foreign invaders. Each time the invading armies were American, trying to conquer our country.

Just like Donald Trump wants to do. How is this defending Canada?

The Canadian stereotype is that we are extremely polite, always apologizing, even when it isn’t our fault. “Sorry” may be the most used word in our vocabulary.

Donald Trump apparently has mistaken this politeness for meekness. The sad thing is that in doing so he is hurting the country he is supposed to lead.

What is the point of that?
