I would be concerned if I didn’t know better. I received a “subscription termination notice” supposedly from my email provider. I had 48 hours to respond.

What exactly I was about to lose was vague. What subscription? What account? And why did I receive the message three days in a row telling me my account would be closed? Isn’t that more than 48 hours? And why is the account number different in each email?

The good news is that if I renew I can get 90 er cent off. That is a great deal – if you know what you are buying.

I’m wondering if the vagueness is a legal ploy. Whoever sent this doesn’t use the corporate name of the provider, nor any of the branding. The return email address is obviously not from a corporation.

To me that means if you click on the link and wind up with malware or worse, there are no grounds to sue, assuming you could even find the people behind this phishing attempt. After all, no specific promises or representations were made. It is buyer beware.

I’m wondering how profitable this scheme is. Scammers don’t publish their financial information though. I imagine it could be a very lucrative business, taking advantage of people who aren’t paying close attention to their messages.

The only thing I know for sure is that I’m not going to be taken in by this scam. And neither are you.
