In the news this week I noted that tanker from Australia carrying liquid natural gas had docked in Saint John, New Brunswick after a 25,000 kilometre voyage. That struck me as strange.
According to the US Department of Energy, Canada has enough natural gas reserves to meet the needs of the entire planet for the next 200 years. New Brunswick alone has enough to fill the Australian tanker 20,000 times. You would expect the province to be exporting gas, not importing it.
Why would we need to import gas from Australia? Is this a business failure or a political one? Does this make us look like a laughingstock in the eyes of the world?
What do you think?
What a long enduring question. I have to confess that when I found out that eastern Canada gets its oil/gas from other countries rather than western Canada, I felt a senses of dislocation; what kind of nation are we anyways. It is a sad commentary on how we do business even as provinces. Deep Sigh.
