I suppose somewhere the back of my mind I knew there were some people in Europe that played American football (as opposed to what Americans call soccer), but I thought that sort of thing had died out with the demise of NFL Europe. Turns out I was wrong.
This poster was in store windows the last time I visited Lippstadt, my wife’s ancestral home. I would have loved to have gone to the game, but we were back in Sulzburg by game day. Looking at the season schedule (ten games), I don’t see myself getting to a game this year, but next season I will hopefully be able to plan better, now that I know there is something to plan for.
I have no idea what the calibre of the play is, probably nowhere near as good as I am used to, but it doesn’t really matter. Facebook tells me the Lippstadt Eagles are an amateur sports team. That means the players aren’t getting paid. That also should mean they are locals, not imports. People playing for the fun of it.
From the video the field looks pretty makeshift. No stands, but I have already seen that at local fussbal games. Still, it looks like it could be a lot of fun to attend. And professional football is so far away – us beggars can’t be choosers.
