Friday’s Question

My umbrella broke. No complaints – it had served me well and faithfully.

I didn’t buy a new umbrella. No need, there was another one in the house, though it was a little bigger.

The umbrella I used for years was basic black and collapsible. It would fit in the computer bag I carry, or even in a large pocket. I generally carried it with me in the bag, even when there was no rain in the forecast.

The replacement wasn’t huge. Also black, it fit in the bag, barely, but not in a pocket. I only carried it when there was a likelihood of rain.

Then it broke. It too was old. Maybe it was time for a new umbrella.

I am frugal though. must be my Scottish heritage. before buying a new umbrella, I looked in the closet to see if there was anything suitable.

The full sized umbrella that covers two people was a non-starter. I use it in storms, but I don’t like carrying it around. too big, and it doesn’t collapse.

But there were others. My wife has a couple of collapsible ones acquired over the years. She can’t use two at once. Maybe I should try one of them.

The problem is that they are what I would have described in my youth as “girly.” I like solid colors, preferably black. Probably a generational thing.

Still, when it was raining this week I grabbed one, a pink and yellow thing. It seemed to make more sense than getting wet.

However, my use of a pink umbrella did generate comment from those who knew me. not really negative, but i was told the color was out of character.

Which brings us to today’s question: Do I buy a new black umbrella or keep using this pink and yellow thing? Does color matter? Or should I save my money?

I’m open to your feedback.
