Am I the only one who has noticed that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney sounds a lot like former Conservative PM Stephen Harper? Not in terms of his policies, but in his branding.
Carney, who took over from the much despised Justin Trudeau, has taken to calling his administration “Canada’s New Government.” The Liberals have been in power for a decade, so that isn’t new. The policies haven’t changed, at least not so far, so what is new? Just the name of the person at the top.
Back in 2006, when Stephen Harper’s party came to power, they referred to themselves as “Canada’s New Government.” Guess what? The Liberals criticized the use of the term, feeling it made the government look partisan. They pointed out that the Government of Canada is not new just because the party in power has changed.
That was then. This is now. The Liberals are in power, so it is “Canada’s new government” even if it isn’t. Apparently it is only a bad term if Conservatives use it.
