What Comes To Your Mind?

Whatever came to your mind first probably says something about you. I’ll admit it – when I saw this on X, my first thought was “a Trump supporter.”

Which amused me when I noticed that the first comment on the post said “a Democrat.” So much is about perception.

I could also have suggested those of a different Canadian political party than the one I currently support. Though there, I understand why people support them. I disagree with the policies, the worldview and the reading of history, but I do understand the appeal.

I also understand the appeal of Donald Trump – though I wish I didn’t. That he is a viable candidate from the American presidency says a lot about the American political system, and even more about the American people.

However, there’s so much more to the question than politics. It addresses questions of faith and belief. It reminds us that people are not always as critical in their thinking as they should be. There are times we can be manipulated, where we will happily believe that black is white or that the sun rises in the west.

That’s why internet conspiracies flourish and scammers, online and off, manage to do so well. We want to believe we are heirs to a Nigerian prince, even if no-one in our family has ever set foot in Nigeria. We are people of hope, and wishful thinking. Not to mention surprisingly naive at times.
