Working Today?

For most of us Monday is the start of a new work week. Many of us would rather be somewhere else.

However, since money doesn’t grow on trees and groceries aren’t free, we head into work each day. Some days more cheerfully than others.

I have always maintained that if work isn’t fun more days than not, it is time to find a new job. Life is to short to spend so many hours doing something you don’t like,

Which is easy to say, but not always easy to do. It can take a while to find a job that is just the right fit.

It has been more than 50 years since I entered the workforce. That number surprises me – I hadn’t thought about it until I started to write this post.

If I took the time, I think I could probably list all the jobs I have had in the past half century, but I might miss a few. I dropped a lot of them from my resume years ago because they just weren’t relevant.

If I was applying to work in a radio station, it didn’t seem to matter that I once was a Micrographic Equipment Operator for the RCMP. (Admit it, you have no idea what that was. You’ll have to look it up.)

Nor does having worked the grill at McDonald’s make me qualified to write speeches for politicians. Plus, that was a long time ago.

Admittedly, some jobs are more fun than others. It took me awhile to understand that, as an introvert, some jobs could be really draining. Retail and other sales jobs weren’t exactly my cup of tea. I know myself better now – I don’t think I would take such jobs again, though I enjoyed them at the time,

The nature of work has changed over the years, on the surface anyway. Not only have some jobs, such as Micrographic Equipment Operator, become obsolete, but remote work has become a possibility for many people.

There are more changes on the horizon, as Artificial Intelligence and increased automation will cause a major upheaval in the workforce. For example, a couple of decades from now there will be no truck drivers, all vehicles will be self-driving.

What won’t change will be the basic dynamic. Employers will be willing to pay those with the necessary skills to do work.

Or maybe that will change too. Maybe Artificial Intelligence and robotic technology will reach the point where human labor is no longer necessary.

Does that scare you?
