Justin Trudeau has staked his political future on the death of one citizen. Canada’s Prime Minister has accused India’s government of being behind the murder of a Sikh activist on Canadian soil.
Trailing in the polls, Trudeau needs a win, amd he is gambling that his strong words about the alleged actions of the Government of India will give him a boost in the eyes of Canadians. The man who ignored alleged Chinese government interference in Canada’s election (which may have benefited his party) has drawn a proverbial line in the sand.
The government in New Delhi has denied any involvement in the murder. Diplomats have been expelled on both sides. No-one is quite sure what will happen next.
It is a serious allegation to suggest that a fellow Commonwealth member, the world’s most populous democracy and a major trading partner, has committed such an act. Now Trudeau has to provide some proof.
If he can, and if charges are laid, he looks good. If he can’t he may as well say goodbye to his political career. It would bringing lying to a whole new level, one that I suspect Canadian voters wouldn’t forgive.
Canada is home to the largest Sikh population outside of India, and there is a certain amount of support among the expatriate community for the creation of a Sikh country, breaking away from India. That is not against Canadian law. We even have political parties dedicated to the breakup of Canada. If they can win over the majority of voters, this nation will cease to exist.
What we don’t need is political violence making its way here from other countries. People need to put their old grudges aside when they move here. Engage in robust debate over policies certainly, but violence has no place here. State-sponsored violence, as the Prime Minister is alleging, is even more repugnant.
Standing up to India, at the risk of trade and close relations, is easy for Trudeau, easier than standing up to China. A cynic would suggest he is doing so just for the political gain and to distract Canadians from very really domestic issues that the Liberals are either unable or unwilling to address.
I hope the Canadian government has irrefutable evidence that the government of India was indeed behind the murder. I want Justin Trudeau to lay out the evidence for the world to see.
If the whole thing turns out to be a political stunt then his party shouldn’t wait for the next election before turfing him.
