Supermoon Rising

There are four of them in 2023, with the next one Wednesday night, the second supermoon this month.

The last time there were two supermoons in a month was in 2018. The next time will be in 2037.

A supermoon is perhaps a misnomer. The moon is the same one we always have, it is just that at certain times it moves a little closer to the earth, which makes it appear bigger. Or super if you prefer.

I’m more of a sunrise person, I don’t usually stay on the beach to watch the moon rise over the Atlantic Ocean. But for the supermoon earlier this month I made an exception.

I will admit to a little disappointment. The moon was impressive as all the commentators said it would be. But I only had my phone with me in Maine this year. Which meant I couldn’t zoom in on the subject the way I would ordinarily do.

The pictures really don’t do the experience justice. If you can be somewhere Wednesday evening where you can watch the moonrise, somewhere without too much light pollution, you can check it out for yourself.

I can’t remember where exactly the moon rises in Ottawa. I know where east is, but where so you see the moon? I was thinking of going to the baseball game – maybe I will see it rising over centre field.
