American Justice

A gunman who killed 23 people in Texas in a 2019 mass shooting has just been sentenced. He was given 90 consecutive life sentences.

I understand the sentence is an expression of public disgust in the crimes, but really? Are correctional officials supposed to keep his corpse on ice after he dies? If he lives to 100, are they supposed to keep his body in jail for another 900 years or so?

Justice is supposed to be blind. It isn’t supposed to be stupid.

Maybe it is their way of saying that every life matters.

In Canada, on the other hand, some asshole multi murderer gets consecutive sentences and our belowed Supreme Court considers it to be cruel and unusual punishment. At the same time, the Scarborough Rapist who graduated to a multiple murderer gets transfered to a medium security prison, until the media and the public find out about it.

Too bad not enough consideration is given the victims of these monsters and not the monsters themselves.

I would think he is more likely to get out with such a sentence. An appeals court could nullify the whole thing based on its absurdity.

They just want to make sure he doesn’t get out.

Michel Foucault argued the biggest goal of punishment was to discourage the next guy thinking of surpassing the last one.
