I waited until just after 3 p.m. Eastern time to post this, because that is when, according the the experts, Canada’s population reached the 40 million mark. Recently we’ve been adding almost a half million people each year through immigration.
In 1967 we celebrated Canada’s centennial, 100 years as a nation with a song that echoed through everyone’s heads, something called “Canada.” One of its lines was: “Now we are 20 million.”
We went from less than four million to 20 million in our first 100 years. It has taken 56 years to double that. There is a movement to increase our population to 100 million by 2100, again, mostly through immigration.
We have the land. We also have a housing shortage because, for some reason, new construction hasn’t kept pace with population increases, especially in urban areas. But we won’t delve into that problem today.
Let’s celebrate 1967 all over again. I’ve included a video link to “Canada” at the top of the page. The song sounds dated and cheesy (and I think i still have a 45 rpm record of it in the basement), but I warn you, it is an ear worm. It’s been running through my head ever since the announcement a couple of days ago that we were approaching this milestone.
The best way to get rid of an ear worm is to share it. Play it at your own risk.
Interesting post. Congratulations on the 40 million! Please reserve a tiny house for me somewhere in the Rockies as part of the next wave. I need mountains.
Shouldn’t have listened to the song 😆 I have heard it somewhere before, and will now be hearing it again and again.
By the way, ear worm is “Ohrworm“ in German. And now I know the English translation. It really is that simple!
