Snowballs

I never sampled these round pastries that the Germans call snowballs. I’m not much into sweet stuff, and I had never heard of these things before. But it seemed every second shop in Rothenburg, Germany, sells them. They’ve been a local delicacy for centuries. Each store or café claims to have a secret family recipe, claiming their version of the pastry is the best.

I’m not sure what brought snowballs to mind today. Chalk it up to my brain spitting out a random thought for a Friday. Maybe it was that the snow from the past week has stayed on the ground. Or yesterday’s snow squalls. A green Christmas for Ottawa seems unlikely, and I am not sure how I feel about that.  There’s a lot to be said about not having snow to shovel.

Maybe things are different in Germany, but these balls of cake don’t really look like a Canadian snowball. Yes they are round, some of them are white (sprinkled with sugar), but they are not exactly ice cold.

I’m told they are quite tasty. Maybe next time I’ll try one – but I really am not a big fan of sweet things.

I have never heard of these before. They look delicious, and definitely a must while in Germany it seems.
Thank you for sharing (even if you did not get a chance to try them yet) – its great to know some things worth trying while traveling.
