I program a satellite music channel that is carried on cable systems and who knows where else. I have never asked, I just know I get feedback from all over the continent. It is called “The Light” and features songs from Christian artists.
I mention that because it is that time of year when I am thinking of Christmas and what new Christmas music to add to the channel. Actually I received my first song of the Christmas season a month ago, from Chris Tomlin I think it was. The latest songs, which I received Monday, have me wondering though if record company representatives understand the word “Christian.”
The songs came from a well-known singer/rapper – I won’t mention his name. Christmas songs, being marketed to Christian music stations, seems like an easy fit. Somewhere along the line though, the idea that those artists being played on Christian stations are expected to behave like Christians seems to have been completely missed by this particular company.
I suspect I am not alone in rejecting music from an artist who says he is a Christian but who apparently plea-bargained his way out of a date-rape charge (while pleading “no contest” to a related offence), someone whose song titles use words that last time I checked you still couldn’t say on radio.
Christians aren’t perfect, and I don’t expect Christian singers to be perfect. I do expect them to try and life out their faith though. What I read about this guy (which I admit could be inaccurate which is why I am not naming him) makes it look as if he isn’t trying. I won’t even be listening to the songs – there is enough new Christmas music out there that I doubt they will be missed.
