American Booze
The US Ambassador to Canada seems to have a liquor fixation. He’s been in the news he is talking about American alcohol on Canadian store shelves. Or, more accurately, the lack thereof. You can’t buy American wine, beer or spirits in most places in Canada. Most of the booze trade in Canada is government controlled. […]
World Cup Winner Prediction
You read it here first. The USA is about to win its first ever World Cup. (That’s soccer/football for you non sports fans.) It isn’t at they are the best team. That has yet to be determined on the soccer pitch. It doesn’t really matter though: it looks like the fix is in. The United […]
Happy Birthday America
America celebrates a milestone birthday today. 250 years old. Yet somehow the celebrations seem muted. I remember the USA bicentennial events, 50 years ago. The whole country was united, and the celebrations ran throughout the year. 2026 doesn’t feel like 1976. Maybe it is the internal divisions. Americans (looking at the country from up north) […]
Friday’s Question
Being an ambassador is challenging. given the current state of Canada-U.S. relations, being the Canadian Ambassador to Washington is well beynd challenging. Which may be why Prime Minister Mark Carney reached out toa business friend for the position rather than a career diplomat. With trade the major irritant between the two nations, it made sense […]
Vladimir Says Thank You!
Actions have consequences. Not always intended. Probably nowhere is that more true than in wartime. It is so easy to make things worse. The United States continues to pummel Iran from the air. Iran doesn’t have the ability to do much in response, but it has managed to close the Strait of Hormuz to shipping. […]
Black Gold Fever
US President Donald Trump said last week he wanted to chose Iran’s next leader. That pretty much guaranteed that those still in power there would chose an Islamic hardliner. Certainly there is no movement towards democracy. The regime is unlikely to support any suggestions of political reform while being attacked Oil prices have risen drastically […]
Regime Change
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney can be forgiven if he feels a little bit like he has a target on his back these days. It isn’t his domestic political opponents he has to worry about. Carney has been unequivocal about Canada’s independence. It will not become the 51st US state. Nor will he back down […]
“Hockey is Church”
Leaving the building on Friday two young men in the elevator asked if I as going to watch the Olympic gold medal hockey game between Canada and the USA Sunday morning. I said yes, at least the first two periods. After that would be leaving for church. “You should stay home and watch,” they said. […]
Another One For the USA
I don’t think I need to add to this. And, sadly, it will probably have to be explained to most Americans reading this.
Sauce For The Goose
The wandering legislators have returned to Texas. The legislature has now passed the law rewriting the 3elctoral map and creating five new electoral districts that will ostensibly deliver five more seats in Congress to the Republicans in the next election. Republicans are hailing it as a triumph for democracy, Or at least for Donald Trump […]
