Starting Off

The snow started falling early in the morning. Somehow it seemed a fitting start to a new year. We were not the first ones to go far a walk in the forest to start the year. The new snow already showed the footprints, or more accurately hoof prints, of the deer living in the forest.

Happy New Year

Welcome to 2025! If you have a seat belt, it is probably a good idea to fasten it now – it’s going to be a wild ride. There will be joy and sorrow, death and birth, war and peace, natural disasters, triumph and defeat. Just like every year. I’m simultaneously anticipating and dreading what the […]

A Time To Reflect

There’s something about the end of the year that leads us to introspection. It’s only a date, but our culture has made it a marker between two well defined points. 2024 is about to end. 2025 is beginning. How was your 2024? Did it turn out the way you expected it to on December 31 […]

Starting Fresh

Calendar dates are just arbitrary numbers. As Carolyn Arends sings, “every day is New Year’s Day.” But we don’t always approach things that way. 2024 is a clean slate. How will you spend the year? I saw the new year in the way I have for more than 30 years now. My wife and I […]

New Year’s Eve, Again

My original intention was to pontificate on 2023, talk a bit about the high and low points of the year. To prepare for that I looked at the post from this day last year, to see if I had made any predictions for the year ahead. I didn’t. Instead I gave you a number of […]

The In-Between Time

The week between Christmas and New Year’s always seems different somehow. It is as if time has slowed down.In Canada, Christmas Boxing Day and New Year’s Day are statutory holidays. Given that, many people take the other three days of that work week off to get an extended vacation. There are fewer cars on the […]

Another Year Begins

Welcome to 2023. Does this new year feel any different than the old one? If it does, I hope it feels better. This year has so much unrealized potential. I feel as if it is going to be a good one. I say that every year – I’m an optimist. In print anyway. Or maybe […]

New Year’s Eve 2022

It’s been a difficult year for many people and for society at large. The COVID-19 pandemic continues, inflation is at the highest level in 40 years, our leaders seem clueless as to how to solve our problems, there are wars and rumors of wars…and teh list is never-ending. It seems appropriate therefore to end 2022 […]

Happy New Year!

On Christmas day I posted the annual Christmas message from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Today as we start a new year it seems appropriate to give an excerpt from a speech given by her father, his Christmas message in 1939. The Second World War was underway and at that point the Nazis had had […]
