Under The Bus

It’s been more than eight months since Donald Trump said he could end the Russo-Ukraine War in a day. Today in Munich, I mean Alaska, he will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin to push for a deal.

Certainly the deal is there to be made, as long as it is on Putin’s terms. If Trump really wanted to broker a peace deal he would invite more than one of the parties to the table.

Of course, if he plans on giving Putin what he wants, some or all of Ukraine’s territory, it would be embarrassing to have Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelensky there. He might object to an American attempt to give his country away to its enemy

A year ago the idea that the United States would betray an ally was unthinkable. A year ago Donald Trump wasn’t president.

It seems to me that Trump wants to become Vladimir Putin when he grows up: an autocratic leader who rules with an iron hand and has dissenters killed. I’m sure Trump has noted that Putin orchestrated changes to the Russian constitution that effectively make him president for life. Trump wants that sort of power.

That Trump would give Putin everything he wants is considered unthinkable by most commentators. He couldn’t possibly be so brazen they say. But this is Donald Trump. Anything is possible.

What will happen in Alaska today is anyone’s guess. Most probable in my mind is that Trump will offer Putin the opportunity to keep the territory Russia has conquered n the past three years. Not that such a deal is Trump’s to offer.

Such an agreement would be a violation of international law. Not that that would worry Trump. Especially when he has a chance to look good for his hero.

When it comes down to it, the only thing certain is that after this meeting the fighting will continue. No matter what Trump and Putin decide, Ukraine is not likely to mildly acquiesce to any plan that it doesn’t have input into.

The experts thought the war would last four days. It is now in its fourth year. And there is really no end in sight.
