Reminder of the Past
The guidebook says there is nothing to see. I guess it is a little outdated. My wife has been visiting Lippstadt, Germany, since her childhood. She knew there had once been a synagogue, but had never visited. This time she walked right by. The guidebook said what was once a synagogue was behind some garage […]
Predicting 2028
When I first saw this on X (as Twitter is now called), my first thought was “I didn’t know there was a way around the 280 character limit.” My second thought was “Why has Elon Musk not ordered this post taken down?” Then I thought about what it says about the nature of political discourse […]
The Vacancy
Suppose nobody wants the job. Then what do they do? That’s not going to happen. There will always be someone with an ego big enough to take a chance, some person who believes that they are different and that the public opinion polls are wrong. And if the polls are correct, well, the history books […]
Hey Donald!
Maybe you were joking, maybe you weren’t when you said Canada should become the 51st state. Apparently you thought Justin Trudeau would make a good governor. Maybe he took more than a month to respond because he was considering the offer. He knew Canadians didn’t want him as Prime Minister anymore, so all jobs offers […]
Stepping Down
In the end, he stayed true to form. It isn’t his fault. None of it. Justin Trudeau was looking forward to contesting and winning the Canadian federal election scheduled for later this year. He’s a fighter he says; he wanted to win, he thought he would win. Instead he is stepping down as Liberal Party […]
Rewriting History
Four years ago today there was an armed assault on the US Capitol as insurrectionists, spurred on by a failed political candidate, tried to overthrow the government. People died in the attack. In the aftermath, more than 1,500 people were criminally charged for their actions on that day, including the politician who incited the insurrection. […]
Taking on the World
They are just kids, but are becoming household names, at least in Canada. The 2025 World Junior Championship, which began December 26, ends in Ottawa tonight. For the rest of the world, influenced by soccer, this is the U20 men’s hockey championship. We know differently. We use the terms we have always used and the […]
A Splash of Color
By posting pictures from early November I am avoiding writing about Justin Trudeau, Donald Trump, terrorist attacks, wars, climate change and whatever other chaos has crossed my path in recent days. I think I am trying to ease myself gently into the New Year. Mind you, I’m trying to be more deliberate in my reading […]
The Countdown Begins
What countdown? Do you mean the 17 days until Donald Trump is sworn in as President of the USA? Or is it the two days until the final of the 2025 World Junior Championship? That’s ice hockey for those who don’t know. Canada won’t be in contention for a medal, which means many in my […]
Starting Off
The snow started falling early in the morning. Somehow it seemed a fitting start to a new year. We were not the first ones to go far a walk in the forest to start the year. The new snow already showed the footprints, or more accurately hoof prints, of the deer living in the forest.
