When I first saw this on X (as Twitter is now called), my first thought was “I didn’t know there was a way around the 280 character limit.” My second thought was “Why has Elon Musk not ordered this post taken down?”

Then I thought about what it says about the nature of political discourse in America, and how it shows that the Republicans will win the 2028 election. Here’s the post, with my thoughts at the end.

THIS WAS ON A FRIEND’S PAGE: An anguished question from a Trump supporter: ‘Why do liberals think Trump supporters are stupid?’

That you have witnessed all the thousand and one other manifestations of corruption and low moral character and outright animalistic rudeness and contempt for you, the working American voter, and you still show up grinning and wearing your MAGA hats and threatening to beat up anybody who says otherwise. What you don’t get, Trump supporters, is that our succumbing to frustration and shaking our heads, thinking of you as stupid, may very well be wrong and unhelpful, but it’s also…hear me…charitable. Because if you’re NOT stupid, we must turn to other explanations, and most of them are less flattering. – Adam-Troy Castro

Pretty convincing don’t you agree? (Though I don’t know if it was actually written by the person it is ascribed to.) All those reasons not to support Donald Trump in one place, with links. Yet millions of people voted for him in 2024, more than in 2016 or 2020.

Democrats and liberals think people are stupid to have voted for Trump. That is a sure way to get people to change their minds, right?

Trump supporters know all the charges against their candidate. They are well aware of his faults. They voted for him anyway. Overwhelmingly. Calling them stupid won’t change their minds

If the Democrats want to win in 2028 they need to find out why people voted for Trump when there were so many good reasons not to. What were the issues that drove people to elect someone with so many flaws?

Calling them names is simple, but doesn’t answer the question. It is also satisfying – the problem becomes the voters’ stupidity as opposed to Democratic Party failings. And since you can’t fix stupid, you can just keep going the way you did in 2024.
