One Week To Go

The US presidential election is one week from today. Though, given the closeness, it may be a while before we find out the winner. That’s what happens in a close race.

The winner of this year’s British Columbia provincial election was not immediately apparent on election night. in fact, it was more than a week before it was determined which party would form the government. It depended on mail-in ballots and recounts on some close ridings.

Because this is Canada, there were no cries of election fraud when the winner couldn’t be immediately determined. Our system is a robust and generally healthy one. Our electoral processes are overseen by independent bodies. Even if they wanted to, no-one is going to be able to “steal” an election.

To the south of us there are already people preparing to claim the election was stolen, that there was widespread fraud. To me that is an admission that you have already given up hope of winning.

Many Americans still believe the 2020 presidential election was stolen from Donald Trump. They believe that because Trump said so. After all, Trump is well know for his truthfulness.

Ask those people for evidence, and there is either silence or more citation of Trump. Not one person has been found who participated in any rigging of the results. Lawsuits from individuals and corporations defamed by the “stolen election” crowd have been successful, with hundreds of millions of dollars in damages awarded. There is just no evidence, despite a system that seems very leaky by Canadian standards.

One week from today, if the media are unable to proclaim an immediate victor, that is a sign that Americans are divided and the election is close. It is going to be an interesting ride.
