Ceasefire?

There are increasing calls for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war, or at least a humanitarian pause to allow the smooth flow of aid into Gaza. As I write this, jets are still pounding targets and there is no indication Israel is interested in stopping their activities, even as they refrain from ground troops moving into Gaza.

The civilian death toll in Gaza, after three weeks of war, is considerably higher than the number killed in Hamas’ terrorist attack that triggered the latest round of violence. Mind you, I would not be surprised if those numbers were inflated – there is no way to independently confirm Hamas’ numbers, and they are not known for their strict adherence to the truth.

Is there any benefit to Israel in agreeing to a ceasefire? From a military perspective probably not. A ceasefire, even if Hamas adhered to it, would just allow the terrorist entity to replenish its weapon supply.

There are other aspects besides military considerations. Hamas is holding civilian hostages (in violation of the rules of war that their spokespeople say they are bound by). A pause would allow time for negotiations to release those people. And with food and fuel running short in Gaza, any relief will be welcomed by the people.

Would a ceasefire prolong the war? Could Hamas be trusted to even observe it if their political wing agreed to it?Would it shorten, or prolong the suffering?

At this point it is all speculation. The experts are divided, and none of them really knows whether a ceasefire is even possible.

What would you do if the decision was yours? Stop the fighting to allow humanitarian aid to those who are in desperate straits? Or press for a quick victory that would allow the shooting to stop and rebuilding to start. It is your call.
