Theoretically I am back home, though it is tough to say for sure since I am posting this before I leave. With the effects of jet lag expected and no time to write while I was gone, I thought i should have something ready to go, so I held off on posting this song before I left.
After repeated listens I am still not sure I like it; it is not my favourite style of music – but I like the sentiment.
In North America refugees are pretty much out of sight and out of mind. Canadian politicians talk about the need (and Canada sends much needed aid) and our willingness to take in some refugees, but the sheer numbers are daunting.
UNHCR, the United Nations refugee agency, says there are three million refugees in Iraq alone, people forced out of their homes by the civil war in Syria and the rise of ISIS. Some have crossed borders to reach a place of refuge, others are internally displaced – still in their own country, but cut off from their homes, possibly never to return.
Those of us who live in peace really can’t grasp what those people have gone through.
